Never read any as a kid, but recently read The Twits and Matilda to my kids over a few bed times, and really enjoyed them. They both did too, so funny and always a little bit dark, which is great cos I can't stand stuff for kids that's all twee and sugar coated.

my favourite was BFG. the thought of a little girl and a big friendly giant stopping the nasty giants from eating the children and even making dreams and meeting the queen. fantastic
