Piers AnthonyHas anyone read the Incarnations of Immortality Series?
The seven books series focus' on a different Immortal, Death, Green Mother, Chronos etc, which each of these roles being taken on by a different human at the start of the book.
The world in which it's set is a modern world but were Lucifer is on a publicity drive to promote Hell, Chronos lives backwards and Death takes over the job by killing his predecessor.
Anthony does an excellent job of linking the different characters together and a chance meeting between two in book one with be revisited in book six but with greater focus.
